Irish Citizenship is a process that allows foreign nationals to live and work permanently in Ireland. The Irish naturalization process is regulated by the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956, and the requirements are set out in the Minister for Justice’s DIRECTIVE ON THE GRANT OF IRISH CITIZENSHIP (Naturalisation)
Irish Citizenship may be granted to a foreign national over 18 years of age and of good character. In his absolute discretion, the Minister for Justice may grant Irish Citizenship to a person who does not fulfil all the requirements for naturalization but who he considers would make a positive contribution to the life of the State.
An applicant for Irish Citizenship must have had continuous residence in the island of Ireland for 5 out of the nine years preceding their application. An applicant must also intend to reside on the island of Ireland after they are granted Citizenship. In addition, an applicant must be able to communicate in English (or Irish) to the satisfaction of a Garda Síochána (the Irish police force).
The Minister for Justice may, at his discretion, exempt an applicant from the five-year residency requirement if the applicant is married to or in a civil partnership with an Irish citizen. The Minister may also exempt an applicant from the residency requirement on humanitarian grounds.
An application for Irish Citizenship must be made on the prescribed form and accompanied by the required documentation. The completed application form and supporting documentation must be sent to the Citizenship Section of the Department of Justice. The current fee for applying for naturalization is €175.
Applicants must attend an interview at the Citizenship Division of the Department of Justice as part of their application process. During the interview, applicants will be asked questions about their application and must take an oath of fidelity to the nation and loyalty to the State.
Once an application for Irish Citizenship is approved, the applicant will be required to attend a ceremony at which they will take the Oath of Allegiance to the nation and loyalty to the State. Following the ceremony, the applicant will be issued a Certificate of Naturalisation. The certificate is evidence that the person is now an Irish Citizen and entitled to all the rights and privileges that Citizenship confers.
